When I Wasn't Homeless

When I Wasn't Homeless

For this work, I asked homeless individuals on the
streets of New York City if I could photograph them while
they thought back to a time when they weren’t homeless,
to a happier and less complicated time in their life, perhaps
to a childhood memory. If they agreed, I would wait and
watch as they appeared to feel around in the dark for
the light. When the light came on I would make the picture.

My ultimate motivation for making this work was the potential
for providing a moment of joy, a ray of light, or a spark of
hope in the hearts and minds of those living in the dark
