When I Wasn't Homeless

When I Wasn't Homeless

Project Statement

For this work, I approached homeless individuals on the streets of New York City and asked if I
could photograph them while they thought back to happier times. I suggested thinking back to
a childhood memory when perhaps life was less complicated.

As they searched for memories, I waited. Once a memory was in in their mind, I made the picture.
Ultimately my intention was to provide a moment of pleasure for the sitter, however fleeting, while
visually preserving the moment.
